It’s this last skill that has developed into a bit of an art form, now often referred to as ‘table scaping.
Tablescaping is creating an environment for the meal. Everything on the table, from the place markers to the lighting, has a consistent theme designed to enhance the food, making it more of an experience than basic nutrition.
If the chef has planned a delicate seafood dish, the table may be covered with a simple white tablecloth with splashes of color. Inspired by the ocean and decorated with seashells twinkling in the candlelight. If you have requested a Mexican menu, perhaps a festive feel will be created with brightly colored ponchos and cactus-shaped margarita glasses.
Tablescaping
One crew that has taken this tablescape trend to the next level is the crew onboard luxury M/Y Far Niente. This crew won awards at the 2015 Newport show for Best Charter Yacht Chef Competition for Vessels 100’ and Above, Healthy Beverage Challenge, and (you guessed it) the Tablescaping Competition.
For the competition, the crew created a tablescape intimating the luxury offered in their most formal setting. The table lined with antique white lace and topped with glittering crystal. In addition to sterling silver goblets, delicate china, and crisp linens. For the centerpiece, an elaborate candle chandelier draped with strands of pearls. And surrounded by romantic touches of vintage hand mirrors and soft pink roses.
The crew could have, but didn’t, stop there. For the regular daytime yacht tours and brokers’ luncheons, they continued to impress with details. Moreover, on a more casual tablescape that included elements from the ocean. Sea glass in dazzling blues and greens shared space with white starfish and sand dollars.
