Poros, a picturesque island in the Saronic Gulf, is a blend of stunning natural beauty and rich historical heritage. Located approximately 36 miles south of Piraeus, Athens’ main port. It is easily accessible to visitors from the United States and around the world. Moreover, the island’s lush pine forests and crystal-clear waters have earned it renown. And the vibrant waterfront is lined with neoclassical buildings, cafes, and tavernas.

Poros is separated from the Peloponnese mainland by a narrow strait, offering a unique island experience with the convenience of mainland proximity. The island can be accessed by both ferries from Piraeus or by taking a country drive from Athens

Poros celebrates its ancient past and maritime heritage through its rich culture. The island’s traditions are alive in its music, dance, and culinary practices. Visitors can expect to encounter local festivals and events that often include traditional Greek music and folk dancing. The cuisine of Poros is a highlight, with an emphasis on fresh seafood, locally produced olive oil, cheeses, and the famous Greek meze (an array of small dishes for sharing).

Dine like a local in Poros

  1. Odyssey Bistro: Known for its authentic Greek cuisine and locally sourced ingredients. In fact, Odyssey offers a menu that perfectly captures the flavors of the region. The restaurant is in a beautiful garden setting, providing a tranquil dining experience. The fresh fish and the mussels are a must try!
  1. Apagio Taverna: A waterfront eatery offers stunning views of the Poros channel. Furthermore it serves a variety of seafood dishes, traditional Greek specialties, and an impressive selection of wines. Fresh fish curds and grilled octopus are a must-try. A family owns and operates Apagio. And they truly make you feel like family here with impeccable service and warm smiles. We went two nights in a row, and they remembered our favorite wine!
  1. Platanos Taverna: Nestled under a large tree, Platanos is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. The taverna specializes in meze and grilled meats. The lamb chops were my personal favorite, with a fresh green salad and cold white wine. The proprietor shared his wine with me and told me stories about playing ball in this same location when he was a child.
  1. The Garden Taverna is a notable dining spot hidden in the back pathways of Poros. In addition, family owned and operated; you can view the gulf from this lovely traditional style taverna. A great spot for a casual lunch. Moreover you might even have a chance to meet the owner Maria and her little Yorkie, Ben.

In summary

Poros exudes a laid-back charm that is typical of Greek island life. The relaxed pace allows visitors to immerse themselves in the island’s serene beauty. In addition, the waterfront promenade is the heart of Poros. It is where people gather to socialize, enjoy a coffee, or dine al fresco while watching the yachts and fishing boats come and go. The island’s architecture, with its mix of traditional and neoclassical styles, adds to its picturesque appeal.

A few of my favorite Boats.
