You may not expect to see deer in a shopping area or goats on a residential street. However, since the world has been on lockdown, wildlife returning to the British-Virgin-Islands has started to take over. Fortunately, in the British Virgin Islands, it is a welcome sight.
Wildlife is definitely returning to the BVI. Magnificent animals such as whales, sea turtles, and even sharks are returning to areas in the BVI where they have not been spotted in a long time.
For the past year, boat traffic nearly came to a standstill. The horizon and anchorages in the islands were virtually empty. Huge passenger cruise ships, fishing boats, personal watercraft, and mega yachts were stuck in ports around the world. Although this was not good news for travelers, it was great news for wildlife.
The waters around the British Virgin Islands are teeming with corals, fishes, sharks, dolphins, turtles, crustaceans, as well as a huge variety of other marine life. While snorkeling or diving in the Virgin Islands you will undoubtedly encounter wildlife — now more than ever. What’s more, on a luxury yacht charter, you can get up close. Whether you swim, snorkel, or scuba dive, there is a great deal to see underwater.
See Humpback Whales on Your BVI Yacht Charter
Whales make an annual migration to warmer waters. These incredible animals can reach lengths of up to 52 feet and weights of up to 80,000 pounds. Adult humpback whales have a thick layer of blubber that protects them during the summer in the cold waters of the North Atlantic.
The adults stay north during the winter months because their diet of plankton is abundant there. However, if the whales are pregnant or expecting, they must migrate southward since the calves will not yet have that protective layer of fat.
While on your yacht charter, keep your eyes open for these incredible animals.
BVI Sea Turtles
The BVI is home to four of the seven species of marine turtles in the world. These four, which are endangered or threatened are the Hawksbill, Leatherback, Green, and Loggerhead. Fortunately, the BVI is actively working to protect these creatures.
Birdwatching
With over 200 species of birds, the BVI is a birdwatcher’s dream. Since the number of tourists has diminished, the number of birds has increased. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars if you visit Mount Sage on Tortola. Not only does this national park have many trails for hiking, but also fantastic views of the surrounding area. Keep a lookout for red-tailed hawks, Caribbean martins, mountain doves, and pearly-eyed thrashers.
